Concludes Sixth Festival with Awards and Verow
Calling Film "Dead"
"Film is dead," declared Todd Verow, director of "The Trouble with Perpetual Deja Vu" which closed the New York Underground Film Festival at the Anthology Film Archives last night. During a panel discussion about new technologies, Verow, who has now shot six movies digitally on his way to meeting his "10 by 2000" goal, encouraged seminar attendees to sell their film equipment while they can still get good money for it. The comments elicited applause from some and hisses from others as Verow and a group of panel participants discussed and debated new technologies used in the production and distribution of movies. Last night, Verow's
efforts on his new feature-length digital work,
"The Trouble with Perpetual Deja-Vu," were recognized by NYUFF festival
organizers who awarded him the Kim's Video Festival Choice Prize -- the
award is selected by festival staff for a film, not chosen by jurors,
that embodies the spirit of the festival. |

VOICE has "...Deja-Vu":
"The best feature on view, (at the New York Underground Film Festival 99) the all-digital Trouble With Perpetual Déjà Vu, follows an underclad, alcoholic young woman through a series of sex and relationship dead ends, while continuing director Todd Verow's explorations of the intimacy and crisp, electric coldness that video lends to tales of pretty, disassociated people." -Gary Dauphin, Village Voice |
