BANGOR FILMS
AT THE
7TH NEW YORK
UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL
excerpt from
Peter Hall's article
for NY Independent Film Monitor
"No NYUFF would be fulfilled without a Todd Verow world premiere,
but No. 7 boasted two digital features from Verow and his hyperactive
coterie of actors and production partners. The first, A
SUDDEN LOSS OF GRAVITY, somewhat confusingly revisits Verow’s youth
among drunken teen drivers in Bangor, ME, but his production design was
inspired, and his unpredictable tone and whimsy were inviting.
Downright stunning was ONCE AND FUTURE QUEEN,
which features Philly, one of
Verow’s stock players, in the genre role of Doomed East Village Babe.
“Antimatter” is as indomitable as her goals are low, and Philly’s vivid
performance brings genuine resonance to lines like, “I think I might know.”
Verow shot QUEEN with maximal economy, using only available light, and
roaming at night with Philly to stage impromptu toilet make-out sessions
with available dudes. Like “Antimatter” herself, the episodic plot starts
with a bang, never stays anywhere for long, and is never boring. Cute
movies like SMITHEREENS should be formally interred under well-worn tapes
of ONCE AND FUTURE QUEEN. "
